Aberration notwithstanding, I have been so happy not having seven feet of snow out there. I’ve been so happy not having to do unspeakable things with unspeakable amounts of the white stuff, always punctuated by the sadistic hit-n-run snowplow driver.
And, I just realized, I haven’t issued one cuss word toward the neighbors across the street who never park in their driveway and make exiting my driveway onto the snow-choked street a riveting daily event.
Now granted, this isn’t New England weather we’re having, but I could learn to like it. Yes, I could. Except for that blistering tropical summer part of the deal.
Eleanor, tell the truth. Isn’t sending this weather down here just a ploy to make the weather up there good for your elections next week?
No, Linkmeister, I want the weather to be really, really bad on Monday, at least where pockets of Conservative supporters are located. It’s not often that Canadian elections make me even mildly nervous, but the predicted result of this one has me shaking in my boots.
Oh, and Kate, we might have had much milder than normal temperatures up here, but we haven’t been spared when it comes to snow. Mild being a very relative term in Canada, of course.
One more thing, you might already know this, but there’s a new Dickens production starting up on PBS tomorrow, er this evening now, as in Sunday evening. It’s a new version of Bleak House and I have it on good authority from friends in the UK that it’s the best Dickens dramatization ever. Which is saying something. As I’ve said many times, I can’t stand reading him, but he translates ever so well to the screen. I believe that you feel the same way, if memory serves correctly.
Oh Oh! Yes! I already have it (Masterpiece Theatre) scheduled for TiVo. Gillian Anderson is in it (she played Scully in the X-Files). She’s got the juicy role of Lady Dedlock. Isn’t it interesting that Dickens’ books translate to film so well, but read like dry bones?
Please, please, please don’t let Canada go all conservative on us. We need you guys!!
No Steven Harpers, please. What really needs to happen is for the Bush Administration to endorse him. Any pol close to Bush (with the exception of John Howard in Oz) has gone down ignominiously over the past few years.
Actually, Linkmeister, Bush has endorsed him. Not loudly, but the endorsement was there. Harper himself has gone on at length about being a Bush fan and how the current government should be ashamed for not going along with Bush on so many things. Which his numerous supporters seem to be ignoring and, for the life of me, I don’t understand why. The late Pierre Trudeau’s vision of Canada was “a just society for all” and we were moving nicely in that direction. But if Stephen Harper is elected, thirty years of progress could vanish in a heartbeat. It’s just so frustrating to see people blindly falling for his nonsense, and not fully understanding the implications of it. This is not the old Progressive Conservative party, not even close. It’s a bunch of extreme right-wing malcontents, who have somehow managed to fool people into forgetting that they’re just Reform wolves disguised in Tory sheep’s clothing. Oh, and if people think Tony Blair sucks up to Bush, just wait until the world sees Harper in action. Ugh.
ok, I will welcome snow when, it gives us a snow day from school/work while I am sick! Tomorrow is another day though
Dunno how you guys lucked out. You’re the only school around here closed today. Most everything else that closed was to the west of us. Feel better!
Eleanor, my thoughts are with you all, today. I spent some time reading up on Stephen Harper and while he doesn’t sound as dumb as a box of rocks (like the guy he admires here), he certainly does have radical views. Seems he has some significant ties with right wingers in this country (including a think tank), too. Be interesting to dig into those associations a little bit. Good Luck!!!

Ah yes, we Canadians are a generous bunch. We’re always happy to share whatever we have in abundance. ;)
Actually, our current coldish snap is an aberration this winter. While the mild weather was nice for the novelty factor, it just didn’t feel right. We’re supposed to have four very distinct seasons in these parts and we feel quite lost when things don’t follow the normal pattern. Today’s -18 C. was much more like it.
