It will be an interesting year, that’s for sure. It’s the one in which the lad flies the coop and silence descends upon the house. Time goes much too quickly. He was a little fella just a couple of weeks ago, wasn’t he??

Not me, the Hawaiian language!

I’m unclear as to whether the Hawaiians just bastardized “Happy New Year.” It’s pretty obvious that “Mele Kalikimaka” was just a transliteration of “Merry Christmas,” since before the missionaries the locals didn’t celebrate Christmas.  They may have had a way of recognizing a new year, although January 1 would surely have been arbitrary.
