Stars. I saw some.

Does anyone else admit to watching The Apprentice with Martha Stewart? Well, we do in this household. I wasn’t expecting much from it, before I watched the first episode, but it had me hooked before the first commercial. It took the lad maybe another week to admit it, but I noticed that when time for the next episode arrived, he landed on the sofa with an enthusiastic plop.

I’ve always liked Martha Stewart, her products, and what she’s created. And despite all reports of her cold bitchiness, I’ve always thought she must have some people skills. She didn’t get where she is without a few to draw on. I find myself liking her more each week. And of all the candidates, I’m sure I’m not alone in wanting to strangle Jim at the end of every episode. What a totally obnoxious individual who, nevertheless, manages to hang on. I kinda think either Martha likes him or is waiting to find one of the candidates who can manage him. Anyone who can manage Jim, tame him, and put his skills to good use has got to be prime management material. Besides, without him, the show could potentially become dull. He’s gotta be good for the ratings.

In any case, just as the show came on last night, I told the lad to pause it (I love my TiVo!) while I made a cup of tea. I hurried out into the kitchen, yanked open the cupboard over the stove and reached for the box of tea. As I pulled it out, a mug toppled out right behind it and smacked me in the face. Right on my cheekbone, just an inch below my left eye. That made me dance around a little bit. Seeing stars is not just an expression. I saw stars swirling around in front of my eyes. Big and little white ones.

I still made my cup of tea, while holding a box of frozen peas on my cheekbone, hoping, of course, that I wouldn’t wake up with a shiner this morning. Finished watching Martha and her gang, drank my tea, and thawed out the box of peas against my cheekbone. I still can’t stand Jim, yet I’m almost beginning to grudgingly like him even if he is horribly obnoxious.

And this morning? Yep, I have a shiner. A faint one, but enough to make people stop and take a second look, wondering, “Does she or doesn’t she?” By tomorrow I expect it’ll be a little brighter purple with some nice yellow streaks. Just in time for Halloween, anyway.
