Then she said "I don't understand"

It was a day or so after I bought the plane ticket for the lad to head out west to hike and camp in the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone (just before the beginning of last summer) that he was informed of the drama department’s tech crew camp to be held during one of the weeks he was gone. The drama teacher was quite angry with him when he told her he wasn’t going to attend, and chided him for his lack of priorities and his lack of loyalty. To which he said, “It’s not a matter of loyalty, it’s a free plane ticket to an incredible adventure. I’m not giving that up.” I’m not sure where the priority part came into the picture. It’s not like he signed his soul over in blood. But that was her take on the situation. As a result, she kicked him off the stage crew team, despite having invested three years in training him. Personally, I jumped up and down in glee. No more drama department demands. YAY!

So, he’s been free of drama department demands this year. Until this week. It appears that the priority factor isn’t any better with the other students. Suddenly the drama teacher found herself a little short of help. She appealed to his better nature and pleaded with him to do a couple of crew jobs for her, running sound and basic grunt work. Of course, since he isn’t technically on the stage crew, he can’t be paid for the work, but he’d be doing a great service for the school and the department if he’d do the work.

And he said, “I’m sorry, but no. I made my choice and you made yours. I think we should live by them.”

To which she said, “I don’t understand.”

He said, “I think you do.”

And he walked away.

Ooooh Yes!!! Good job, kiddo.
