Fresh serving of cynicism

On the heels of the Prez’s major important speech about evildoers yesterday morning, the media, at the height of rush hour, went nutso over a terrorist threat to New York City’s subway system. The mayor had a press conference with his police commissioner, Ray Kelly, and an FBI guy and they all said a lot of not much. Other than keep riding the subway, we’re handling it. Then news trickled out that it all had something to do with a raid in Iraq and 19 Al Qaeda operatives. And then the Department of Homeland Security said, “huh?” According to an NPR blurb this morning, Homeland Security is still saying, “What are you talkin’ about?” Which kind of leaves the people of New York City...where? And which leaves a lot of the rest of us thinking this has the unmistakable stink of politics.

It’s not a good thing when we have to sort and sift through news reports, trying to figure out whether the New York City mayor and police commish are on the level or whether Homeland Security is on the level. Which, of course, leads the more cynical among us to think this is yet another calculated attempt to raise the Prez’s flagging poll numbers and distract people from the dozen or so other unfavorable news stories floating around on the front pages of the newspapers. This is tiresome and dangerous. How do we know whom to believe and when they are or aren’t crying “wolf!”?
