I can’t account for it, either. Last year a cord was going for around $360. I thought that was quite steep, but figured as long as I was going to pay the same price either way, I might as well get the most bang for the buck. When I heat with wood, my house is very warm. When I heat with gas, I keep the thermostat set low and my nose is always cold.
Maybe last year there was a bumper crop of weeded out trees somewhere locally. It’s now seasoned and coming to market. No telling what next year’s prices will be. Probably a lot more expensive with the increased demand. I’ll be thinking about buying a couple cords of cheap half green wood in the spring. It should be seasoned enough to burn by late autumn. I don’t imagine natural gas prices will be back to ‘reasonable’ prices for several years, if ever.
That ATC piece made me rather glad I didn’t buy a pellet stove, by the way—although using one would be a lot less work.
Jack London and White Fang are a perfect fit.
Oh .... ~sigh~ ... I would so love to have a wood stove!!! ... I’m jealous kate!
Yup, come November you will be kicking your self in the arse if you don’t buy some lol. And I will try and remind you in the spring about the green wood. Gawd knows how many times over the years we have always said that and then just keep putting it off until its just to late lol! It just always seemed like the last thing I wanted at the end of winter was to stack a couple more cords of wood. And I didn’t even have to at the time. I had the EX to do it!!!
My brothers company is going to lose money big time this year. The senile old coot of an owner wouldn’t listen to him (or his wife) to buy early. So now they are keeping the costs low for the long time customers so they won’t go to someone else, or go to using wood if they can. It’s too bad you didn’t have oil heat. The bro is buying the company sometime next year. (Ya must be nice huh?) And you know he would take good care of you ;)
Yeah, J, stacking two cords of wood is about a 3 day project and it’s not my favorite thing to do. And not exactly something I want to do again in a couple of months. But I’ll tell you what, once it’s all stacked, it’s a lovely feeling to stand back and admire the finished product. I get this amazingly secure feeling when I see all that wood stacked and ready and MINE.
Lynn - there really is something wonderfully cheery about walking into a room with firelight bouncing off the walls...not to mention the cozy heat. I do love my woodstove.

That price drop doesn’t square with this story from All Things Considered. Regional differences within the NE?
