Cider Press Hill

Halfway there

I’m getting us networked, slowly. By degrees. The easy part was hooking up Verizon’s DSL modem. That took all of 15 minutes. And maybe another 20 minutes to set up the wireless Linksys router to my computer. I’m internet connected. And I got a network set up for my end of things.

The lad, however, is not internet connected or networked. I couldn’t find a floppy disk in the entire house. Imagine that. Not one single floppy disk hiding anywhere that I could use to make a network set up disk for the lad’s computer. I have to run out and get a couple before I can do anything else with his computer. At least, I think I do. That’s what the Network Setup Wizard told me and Verizon also strongly suggested it.

From there, I have a feeling things are going to head south quickly. Getting the wireless adapter to talk with the wireless router doesn’t look all that easy to me. I could be wrong, but I just have that feeling it’s not going to run smoothly at all. It’s going to involve a lot of stomping around and banging my head on the desk and probably a few colorful epithets.

This, of course, would probably sound easy as pie for anyone who knew what s/he was doing. But I’m flying by the seat of my pants here. Because, naturally, the directions coming from Verizon don’t bear any resemblance to the directions that come from Linksys, with regard to networking the wireless equipment. The answer seems to lie somewhere between the two and all I have to do is figure out the magic combination.

It will be an absolute catastrophe if the lad isn’t connected by this evening. There’s this girl, you see. She and he go into withdrawals and cold sweats if their instant message windows aren’t operating at all times.

I’m doing my best, but to tell you the truth, I’d really rather be doing just about anything else at this point.
