1800 tequila

Late this evening a friend of mine called and asked if I’d like to go out for a late dinner. “I’ve had a horrible day and I need some cheering up,” she said. “You always cheer me up.” Which is a very nice thing to hear said about oneself. “My treat,” she added, having just received her more generous than expected tax return.

So off we went to a Mexican place where the margaritas are sublime. Now, it should be said that I don’t imbibe very often. It’s more of an occasion when I do, than when I don’t. Therefore, one 1800 tequila margarita does me just fine.

But this evening, I threw caution to the wind and ordered a second one. The waitperson wondered which of us was driving and when I pointed to Jo, she smiled and asked if I wanted mine with salt again. Indeed, yes. She brought it and we chatted for some time, being that the place was sparsely populated with clientele.

As I found my way to the bottom of my glass, the collection of waitpersons around our table grew. Many stories and much joking ensued. Finally the manager joined us and many more stories and laughter followed. I was utterly charmed as most of the stories originated in Mexico where the wait staff grew up. Customs and culture were shared, funny family stories were told. And the wait person who was assigned to us in the beginning hugged us both and said we were the best customers ever. I’m not entirely sure that the second margarita had anything to do with it, but I think it might have.

It was one of those rare and special evenings.
