Gravatars

I have jumped on the Gravatar bandwagon. I really wasn’t planning on it, but Les over at Stupid Evil Bastard wrote a lovely Expression Engine plugin for using Gravatar on one’s site—and I have yet to meet a plugin that I don’t like. I use mine in my comments section.

So, what is Gravatar? It’s a Globally Recognized Avatar. A small personal graphic, of your own choosing, that follows you around the web in blog comments or forum postings, wherever you may post, providing that the host accommodates Gravatars. I made my own out of a Picasso painting, but there are thousands of free ones out there that are available for the taking.

Why bother? Well, why not? It’s kind of fun. And depending on how you use them, they can become a great graphic element in a blog’s design. Besides being a nice visual for people who are more visually oriented. But to see what I mean about incorporating gravatars into a graphic design do check out these pages at hicksdesign and Binary Bonsai and Richard’s Online Journal and jinabolton.com
