Big fizzle

rain The weather persons have a bit of egg on their faces this morning. Our major winter storm fizzled overnight. The winter storm has been downgraded to a weather advisory now. It’s raining cats and dogs out there. We may get a couple of inches of snow later today or this evening, but most of the precip will be rain. This makes me very happy. The lad, of course, was crushed to learn that they won’t get a snow day out of the storm. He was so counting on it.

Apparently this nor’easter decided to hug the coast and it’s not far enough out to sea to blow snow back at us. That’s cool. Looks like this will be Maine’s winter storm this time around.

I noticed this morning, when I walked out the door, that it feels like spring. I’m not nuts enough to think that spring is really and truly here, but I think it’s really close now. And I love the rain. The roads look all clean and fresh. My car is all shiny and salt free again. The snow is melting and washing away! There was something in the air that felt green. But spring isn’t quite here yet—I haven’t smelled the briny sea breeze yet. That’s the real harbinger of spring for me.

I heard on the local news yesterday that the sap is running throughout New England. Maple trees have already been tapped and maple sugaring is in full swing. A full month early. That’s really quite remarkable. One of the maple sugar producers wondered if this was good for the maple trees. He wondered aloud about global warming, but said the early season could be a fluke. Time will tell, but he’s a little nervous about it. Maple trees have been suffering the past few years.

In unrelated news...how utterly disinterested I was to hear Tony Blair wish Prince Charles and his intended bride, Camilla, best wishes for a blissful wedded life. They even have the Queen’s blessings. How sweet. It would be easier to be interested if they didn’t perpetually parade their dysfunctional lives and foolish behavior in front of the public’s noses.

Whatever.

It’s raining and I’m happy about it. Spring flowers are popping out all over the place in my mind.
