You know, even though he looks and acts mostly grown up, moments like this give me a glimpse of my little boy who still lurks in there from time to time. It really does make me smile.

To waste, to destroy, our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining, in the days of our children, the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them amplified and developed. ~Theodore Roosevelt

So the lad calls me on his cell phone while walking down the street to the library. He just got out of his intern stint, is meeting up with a friend, and they’ll walk back to school for the drama department preps and rehearsals. When it came time to hang up, I said, “see ya, bud. Let me know if you need a ride.” And I hung up. A couple of seconds later the phone rang and it was the lad again.
“Are you upset?” he asked.
“No, why?”
“Oh, I thought maybe something was wrong.”
“Why??”
“Well, usually when you hang up you say, “I love you, bud” and you didn’t this time.”
“I love you, bud.”
“Thanks. Love you, too.”
I had to sit and think about that for a few minutes. Made me smile. I’d best stick with tradition after this.
