Panic in the streets

The supermarket called this morning to see if the lad could come in to work three hours early. The place is absolutely mobbed. They need extra hands. Much to their disappointment, he couldn’t. His Dad decided to come up here and take him out to brunch instead. He was already in transit so the extra work hours were out of the question.

I went out to pick up the mail at the P.O. and it took three times longer than usual just to get there. I haven’t seen so many people out on the streets since the height of tourist season. Bumper to bumper traffic all over town. The supermarket parking lot was packed clear out to the road. That doesn’t even happen during the height of tourist season. You’d think people were going to starve to death between this afternoon and Monday morning if they didn’t get out to stock up right away.

When I stopped in at the convenience store to grab a carton of half and half, the manager half jokingly asked if I didn’t want some bread and milk, too. That made me laugh. He said it had been a constant stream all morning and, really, if I thought I needed some, I’d better grab it now because it would all be gone in a couple of hours. “People are crazy today,” he said.

It’s not as if snow storms are rare around here. So what is this storm induced panic all about? Really, it’s kind of funny.
