38? HA!
I am up to 100 banned IPs and something like 1900 unique URLS in my MT-Blacklist.
Shutting off comments on old pages has really stopped the worst of it for me.
Brian, if you can upgrade to MT 3.121, do it. The newest version of the Blacklist is fully integrated, and it’s been a lifesaver. So far I’ve only had 2 or 3 per day get through, if that. It’s blocking 400-500 per day.
And I add my thanks to Linkmeister. I needed to upgrade and the new anti-spam features on Expression Engine are terrific. Glad you brought it up.
I’m not trying to burst your bubble…
But I think it’s only fair to warn you IP Banning does little to prevent future spam on your blog. And it does nothing to stop spamming in general. Because you’re right, they just find new IP addresses… and apparently that’s really easy. :(
The funny thing is, the URL that points to where this is explained… in detail, why IP address banning is problematic… BOTH blogs, the URLs, which would give you that information are BLACKLISTED by your comments!
Imagine that.
Seems a little like a conspiracy to me. Somebody doesn’t want the truth known on your blog maybe? ;) heh.
Pretty soon we’ll all have blacklisted each other because I presume these spammers liberally ‘borrow’ some legitimate IP addresses. But I wonder why my comments are blacklisted? Huh.
Well, it does seem that the new version of Expression Engine has several built in controls that prevent spamming without outright banning or blacklisting. There were several in the previous version, too, which is probably why I haven’t had a problem with this blog so far. It’s the closed blog that seems to get all the spammer attention, but, for all their effort, nothing ever happens. It’s a waste of time for them.
Back in the day there was such a thing as netiquette that people took seriously. But now...fergedaboutit. All’s fair, I guess.
Well, it’s all about Google-ranking… so if this other blog isn’t on-line and accessible to Google, then their spam comments are useless.
I still think the problem lies within the public who actually buys these spammers’ wares. :( But I guess there’s nothing to be done about that. :(
