Another child gone

This morning the news tells us that the second young lad from New Bedford, MA has died in Falluja. He was 19 years old—only two years older than my own lad. Still a boy, really. But gone now, leaving behind bereaved parents and a young wife of 5 months. The town is shaken. Two of their kids lost in one campaign. Casualties for New England are becoming more frequent now. Too frequent. They served, they did what they felt was right. But that doesn’t prevent me from feeling incredible anger at the people who decided to spend our kids’ lives as if they are an expendable commodity.

15 from Army and Marine units based here in the past two weeks.  None were local kids, but it still gets the lead on the TV news.

Another one listed yesterday afternoon from the next town over. Another one from downstate. A couple from New Hampshire, one from Maine. The local news has started talking about it a lot. I think there are too many to keep quiet about now.
