ummmm, where do you go after Jags?
Hummers! Apparently they are the newest of the status symbols here--all in designer colors, too. Have been noticing an increasing amount of them in our town lately (and we have one of the two private schools you mentioned here). Nothing funnier (or scarier, actually) than seeing these women trying to actually drive one while talking on her cell phone. I laugh while getting the hell out of their way each time I do.
You’re right about properties being over valued, Tamara. It makes me shudder to think what will happen if the real estate market suddenly tanks as it did in the early 90s. Bankruptcy is a short step away for many folks in that case, I’d imagine.
There are days when I think it would be a good idea to sell my house now (it has tripled in value since I bought it), rent until the lad goes away to school, and then go someplace where real estate is reasonable and buy a small place with cash, and tuck the rest away for old age. I may wish I had in another year or so. I don’t see how these prices/values are sustainable.
There is a lot of money floating around out there and lots of consumption going on. How much of it is financed though? If the good times quit rolling, it’s going to be messy.
Only a couple of Hummers in town here that I’ve seen (basic khaki). God I hate them. One of them lives near me so I see it a couple or three times a week in the mornings. Tank driving in suburbia. How sweet.
And I think the cell phone comes as standard equipment on them.

I think also the price of the Jags have changed. I’ve noticed a lot more of them in our city, as well. Specifically our neighbourhood.
I also think it is due to the cash buy-outs in high-tech and the higher than norm property values here. The banks are more than happy to give folks an equity line of credit on their over valued homes, tho I would hate to see what happens when the real-estate market crashes.
