Batten down those hatches

Okay, so a couple of days ago, the weather forecasters said that Hurricane Noel would go veering off to the northeast toward the Canadian Maritimes and we wouldn’t have many storm related effects beyond high surf and a little breeze.
All of a sudden, we’re expecting Noel to turn into a whomping big nor’easter that’ll rip the place apart. Well, lovely. Beginning at 6 AM, we are under a strong wind warning with sustained winds of around 35-40 miles per hour and gusts upwards of 55 miles per hour and about 5 or 6 inches of rain. Well, we can use the rain.
One of my friends and I went out to dinner tonight and afterwards, rather than heading to the grocery to stock up on bread and milk, we went to Wally World to get storm supplies. I had to get a stronger and larger tarp (10’x24’) for my woodpile along with steel stakes to anchor it to the ground. (I’ve already put it out and staked it down.) Also bought some oil for my oil lamps and a few candles. I suspect that if we have as strong a blow as the weather forecasters are saying, we may end up without power for a while.
Nor’easter season officially started 3 days ago. That doesn’t mean we have to be in a rush to christen it, though. Jeepers. But, it’s better than a flat out hurricane. These storms make me nervous. It’s the horizontal rain driven by the high winds that keeps me on edge. Water finds ways into places it has no business finding ways into. I do wish it would blow out to sea overnight.
