This morning when I woke up, I leaped to the window to see if I had baby grass yet. And what did I see? Two mockingbirds gobbling grass seed as fast they could. Not a baby blade of grass in sight and not likely to be if the mockingbirds have anything to say about it. I tore down the stairs and out the front door flapping my arms like a lunatic and hollering besides.

The mockingbirds flew a short distance to the neighboring weeping cherry tree and sat waiting for me to go away. As soon as I did, they came back. Rinse, repeat. Several more times.

I’m not normally an unkind person towards the local wildlife, but they are NOT going to eat my grass seed. I waited on the front porch for them to come back. And I had my hose set to long distance. They came back and I gave them a good cold bath. This time they flew way far away and I haven’t seen them since. I’ve been watching.

No, they’ll wait until dawn to come back. They’re not dumb.
