April Fool's Pranks--one answer

How the custom of April Fool pranking came about remains shrouded in mystery.

When the western world employed the Julian calendar, years began on March 25. Festivals marking the start of the New Year were celebrated on the first day of April because March 25 fell during Holy Week. The adoption of the Gregorian calendar during the 1500s moved the New Year to January 1. According to the most widely believed origin postulated for April Fools’ Day, those who could be tricked into believing April 1 was still the proper day to celebrate the New Year earned the sobriquet of April fools. To this end, French peasants would unexpectedly drop in on neighbors on that day in an effort to confuse them into thinking they were receiving a New Year’s call. Out of that one jape supposedly grew the tradition of testing the patience of family and friends.

But that’s only one theory. There are more.

True Confessions...

My guilty pleasure - well ONE of my guilty pleasures is watching American Idol--I do wish it was on any other network than FOX but no one asked me.  I have watched since the second or third year and rarely miss an episode.  I will tivo my “favorite” shows or watch them ‘on demand’ rather than miss AI.  This year, though, is - so far, anyway - not nearly as good.  Or maybe like so many things, it has just run it’s course.  Part of the problem is the addition of Kara, the elimination of Paula and the addition of Ellen DeGeneres.  Ellen is hysterical and the few times I have ever seen her daytime show, I have liked it, but on AI she is just...........well boring.  I really like Simon and when his new show debuts next year, I imagine I will be back in the kitchen watching on my television, so I do not annoy the other person in this house.  cool smirk

Does anyone else ever watch any of the reality shows??  When my goddaughter is here (she is from Hawaii, goes to college in Boston) I have to watch, ‘So you think you can dance,’ with her.  And then there was the day she had a bad cold, so she curled up on the kitchen window seat with a pillow and blanket and watched an entire day of some reality show about little people--it was very strange and she watched for something like 8 hours straight.  I thought I would lose my mind!!  Have no idea what it was called or even what channel it was on.  She was totally engrossed in it though.............

For those of you who do not know me - which would be everyone - sometimes I do extra work in movies and so on.  As such, you have to sign up with casting agencies and everywhere else you can so that the few opportunities that are out there actually reach you.  I forget about some of the places I am signed up with and so today I just received this email from one of them..........."Nobody likes cold soup, especially our clients looking for the perfect face for their media project! We noticed you’ve not logged in the last few months and we want to be sure that we are submitting the freshest images and contact info for you. So login soon to verify what is in your profile is up to date. We’ll do the rest.  Of course we’ll continue to submit you automatically to every project that matches your look and location! Thanks for partnering with TalentSoup. Have a great week!” I had completely forgotten about TalentSoup as I get almost all of my work through Boston Casting.  But I have to tell you that starting out with ‘No one likes cold soup’ may be a great way to get your attention.......or not.  I am not totally sure!!  It did make me laugh, though.

You will not be subjected to as much of my nonsense and rambling today as I am wicked behind in everything.  Train was 25 minutes late and since I am such a nice person, I let my husband sit in the car and wait for it instead of throwing him out and coming home.  Note to self:  He CAN take his own car and leave it at the station!  And then I came in and phone was ringing.  Turned out to be a long phone call, so now I am rushing.

They are saying sunshine later today...it would be nice for all of us, but particularly for those poor people who are flooded out of their homes or trapped on their streets.  Anyone following this in the news....Rhode Island is basically under water.  Check out the pictures of the Warwick Mall, absolutely incredible.  The radio station just went down a list of road closings, road detours, etc. that is absolutely unreal and that was just in Massachusetts.

Happy April Fool’s Day!!  I am sure I knew once, but I have forgotten now, but what IS April Fool’s Day?  Of course I happen to think it is absolutely perfect that Sarah Palin is hosting a new show on FOX tonight that features interviews with various celebrities about overcoming obstacles in their lives.  Only thing is, she did not interview these people - in fact some of them did not even know they were going to be on this show.  April Fool’s indeed!!

House for sale in the Berkshires

I am trying to sell my home in the Berkshires so thought I would post a link in the hopes that someone might know someone that might know someone else.........  This is the house I grew up in, my dad grew up in and my sons spent every vacation in.  Originally it was my grandparents’ ‘summer home’ - their winter home was in the booming metropolis of Great Barrington laughter 5 miles away.  But when the only way to get around is by horse and buggy. you do what you have to do.

My mom had put it on the market slightly before she passed away this fall as she was moving in with us.  It had been sold - or nearly so - to a wonderful woman that we all like and someone who loved this old home as much as we all do but when the market fell apart, so did her investments I guess so that was the end of that.

Feel free to pass this on to anyone who might be interested.  I am at the wrong stage of my life where I want to take on a second home and I have absolutely no desire to move back up there permanently.

Rain, rain, go away

light rain

and don’t come back for a lot of days!  There was a sliver of sunshine this morning when I dropped my husband at the train, but it was short lived.  A friend from the Berkshires wrote that the daffodils were painting themselves new shades of yellow...........ours here, while not out, are probably rotting in the soil.

We live in a town with rivers that tend to overflow with just a few days of rain, so you can imagine what is going on now.  I have a friend who lives VERY close to the river and the last storm a few weeks ago she had over 6’ of water in her basement.  I do not even know how you cope with that.  Her comment was that she wished these 100 year floods would stop occurring every 5 or 6 years!

But we are lucky, our house sits high enough and even tho we are surrounded on three sides by woods-green belt-and a brook, we do not have an issue.  I was watching Dusty (my cat--who SHALL be a topic one of these days) go up and down to the basement through her little cat door and since she has not been taking a life preserver with her or a towel and comes up dry, I figure it is OK.  But just to be sure, I just went down and checked and dry as a bone.  Neighbors on both sides have sump pumps (plural) and they have been running nonstop.

I joked yesterday about wanting a duckboat to bring me home--they actually are using them in several communities to transport people around.  This is just crazy.  Rhode Island is really under water.

I take some blame--I bought myself a new car a month ago--a cute little hardtop convertible with a sunroof!!  So of course it figures it would rain virtually every day since I got it!  But if the weather people are right, I might actually use it this weekend the way it was intended!!  And then off to New Orleans for a week. WhooHoo.

Thank you again Kate for allowing me to play in your sandbox!!  And thank you to all of you who are actually commenting on my nonsense.  I am having fun.  Of course I am neglecting my FaceBook page, but maybe that is a good thing!!

Play nice everyone, I am off to work.

heavy rain

Well, inquiring minds need to know.  With this incredibly shitty weather, I have to be silly, no serious stuff today.  Also I have to go to work shortly so no time to get into one of my rambles....

So, is it Butt or Buck and while we are at it, I have a few more--sort of along the line of, ‘you say TO-ma-TOE, I say to-MA-toe, stuff…

Is it (as in the country), CHILL-E or CHILL-LAY??

Is it (as in the dickhead former VP), Chaaney or is it ChEEney - Chris Matthews insists it is ChEEney…

Is it ComPAIRable or is it Comp-er-able

Is it PEE-onies or is it PE-OWNIES............

There are many more but, that, my friends, is all I’ve got today.....

If you live in Massachusetts, bone up on the backstroke cause we are going to be needing to know how!!

light rain

Just another lovely day in the neighborhood.  Was up early, showered, dressed and waiting for the Harvey Doors technician to come and replace my brand new front doors--the storm doors are defective.  Moved my car out of the garage so I could get out without making them move their truck and then the phone rang.  Technician is sick, can’t make it, no one else is available.  I am sure that is true and of course who wants someone here that is sick, but it is still annoying because you rearrange your day [took the day off] to accommodate them.  Ahhh well, we rescheduled for Friday - I do not work on Fridays - and told them I wanted the first appointment of the morning, none of this 8-12 crap.  Time will tell.

And the rains are here as promised.  Not sure exactly how much we are supposed to get over the next few days but I guess it is a lot.  Not sure where it is going to go.  Neighbors on each side of me have sump pumps running 24/7.  Luckily our house sits just high enough that we seem to be OK.  Plus when we built it, we had them put french drains around the outside of the house at the foundation level and do a few other things as well.  Our first home had a sump in the cellar so we were just a little gun shy.  At the time the builder told me I was crazy that I would never have a problem.  I told him I did not care, that was what I wanted and that is what I got.  Given the amount of rain we have had, I am ever so glad I stuck to my guns.  Gee, listen to me--gun shy, stick to my guns--I must have been hanging out with Sarah Palin this weekend.  HA

I met and listened to Niki Tsongas yesterday and came away very impressed--I had agreed to co-host a reception/fundraiser in her honor.  She is very low key which may not serve her well in her reelection bid and hopefully she can motivate voters in other ways.  But very thoughtful, very bright and very insightful.  I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.  Of course she spoke at length about the passage of the health care reform bill and I so wish some of the more strident opponents would have been there to listen...I think they might have come away with a different attitude.  This whole thing just baffles me.  I do not know everything in this bill, I doubt anyone does, but I think I actually know more than a lot of the naysayers.

Did you know, for example, that prior to the passage of this bill that women in some states could have been denied insurance or lost their coverage because they had a C-section once?  Yes!  Did you know women who were victims of abuse could lose coverage or be denied coverage prior to the passage of this bill?  Yes!  Did you know in some states women were charged as much as 50% more than men for the SAME coverage?  Uh-huh!  OH, and businesses in some states would not hire women because it would mean an instant jump in the insurance benefits to employees.  Now I have to believe that if more people--women particularly-knew just a few of these facts, they might have a slightly different outlook.  We here in Massachusetts are spoiled cause we are a liberal state and do not have to deal with a lot of this.

After listening to Niki and hearing some of these things, I understood why Nancy Pelosi said as she announced the passage of the bill, something to the effect of...’finally being a woman will no longer be a pre-existing condition.’

And now I am off to the dentist.  Another crown!!  I told my dentist that I have so many crowns now, I really ought to be the ruler of a third world country.  Hell, with what I have paid for them, I could OWN a third world country.

Have a lovely day everyone.............heading to Kate’s neck of the woods this afternoon to see my brother’s new house.  He and his girlfriend (he is wicked old--should I still say girlfriend??) just bought a house near the beach.  And then line dancing tonight.  Yup, line dancing.  My friends and I go every Monday night at an Irish Pub in Lawrence.  FUN!!

Ciao’
