partly cloudy

OK, so been here a week and a half and today is partly cloudy with some light showers, first time!  Usually it rains through the night and is gorgeous all day.  But I am not complaining--somehow a rainy-ish day here is not like one in New England, it really is not a factor at all unless it is torrential!  So I just might postpone my daily swim at Kailua Beach until later.

After all of our trips here, we pretty much have it down to a science Our first day here, Joe joins a gym for a month (yeah he is one of THOSE types), this year it is 24 hour FItness.  On the days he goes to the gym, he drops me off at Kailua Beach--me, my boogie board and my books (life is VERY good), when he finishes whatever he does, he comes and joins me for an hour, back to the house, shower, change and off.  If it is not a gym day, then we go early to sightsee, explore new places and revisit all of our favorites.  Already made one trip out to the North Shore, will hit it one more time before we leave.
A hike in the Waimea Valley is on the schedule next week, along with a tour of the Macademia Nut Farm.  We have been there at least 4 times--in fact we took our friends who live here to it!!--but never took the tour cause we were never there on the right day, so we are determined to do it.

Spent yesterday at the Blaisdell (sp) Center in Honolulu at an “All things Hawaiian” show (Steve, if you are reading this, I would recommend it, it was terrific, lots and lots of samples of foods etc to try - and lots of made in Hawaii products.  We were there, along with another college friend of mine Marcia for over 4 hours.  Then off to Waikiki Beach, watched the sunset - spectacular as always, and dinner at one of our favorites.

Did I mention I could get real used to this??  My body is totally on Hawaiian time right now, I so do not want to go back to NE.  Love swimming every day, being able to stay in the water for hours without freezing to death!  Not too many negatives to living here, other than the cost of real estate and food.

Went shopping for ingredients for a dinner I made last week, plus some extras and the bill was close to what I spend a week at home.  Food is HIGH!  But you do not pay heat and a lot of other things we pay for on the mainland so I think it is a wash.

Taking everyone out for Mexican food tonight, so should be fun!

OK, just thought I should post something.  More when we return to work, home and reality!!

clear nightclear night

The countdown begins.  Nearly time to head back to Hawaii for our ‘almost’ annual visit.  Each time I wonder if it is the last time; if the appeal has run it’s course.  I will have to let you know when we return............or while we are there!!

So, am starting to make lists and try to consolidate things.  House charger for cell phones (Check!)--finally got smart and got HIM the same phone as me!!  Car charger for same (check); Digital camera (check); Charger for it, along with extra battery. (check); GPS (yes you CAN get lost on an island)--first time Joe went with me (and my trip by myself is a story for another day), I took him on a tour.  Managed to get ON the Army base, and took forever to find my way off. Of course he just sat there laughing like an idiot.  Today I would probably end up in jail-then tho, no one paid any particular attention to us--Maybe it was the jeep!  And then another day I got us to a place where the road actually ran out, no road, good for off road vehicles, but no real road, so now I take the GPS. Charger for GPS, check! Netbook (check); charger for Netbook, (check); Ipod (check); Charger for Ipod - charger for Ipod (no check, cause it is not where it should be).

Now how ridiculous is all of the above, my life has been taken over by ‘things’ and even worse, things that all need their own little bits and pieces to make my life better!  Better?  Or more complicated?  Sometimes I wonder and sometimes I swear I am channeling my mom!!

And books, god forbid I should go on a plane without books.  I have this fear of being without one or seven.  It is like when I used to smoke, used to panic at the thought I MIGHT run out in the middle of the night or something so always had extra.  Have transferred one addiction for another, although I have to admit, this one is a lot healthier. I am hooked on a series by J.D. Ward and the latest book came out about 6 weeks ago.  I have had it since the day it came out, have touched it, picked it up, turned it over and managed to NOT read it yet.  If it is even half as good as the others in the series, I will lose myself in it for most of the trip.

This time I am trying something different. I am always excited to go so the 12-13 hours go by--well, not exactly quickly, but not too bad.  Ahh, wrong, it is bad, but I am anxious to see our friends, so I can deal.  It is coming home that is the killer, it takes me days to get back on schedule here, the 6 hour time difference coming back is awful.  SO, we are flying Vegas, spending one night in Vegas, flying out the next AM on Hawaiian Air (and I have always wanted to fly on that airline) and then on our trip home, we go back to Vegas, spend 3 days or so there and then home.  I am hoping it will be easier and if it isn’t, at least I will have some gambling time!

And that’s all I’ve got people...........assuming anyone is reading any of this anyway.  The news the last couple of days might be marginally better than it has been.  There is still too much skepticism and racism out there but I don’t think that is going to change any time soon.  Just if each one of us does our part, one by one, by one we might begin to get through to some people.

OH, and at this very moment, the Red Sox are beating the Yankees.  One can always hope!!

So, Aloha and Mahalo--first of all to Kate for being so gracious and generous in allowing me to play on her blog and to those of you who actually check in here now and again and read my nonsense and, on occasion, actually comment on it!!

Blogging from Lanikai, (Oahu), will be starting before you know it!!

Ciao!

Berkshires

Anyone want to buy my house in the Berkshires?  I am heading up there today to start to try and figure out how to empty 9 rooms of furniture--most of which no one in our family can use--we all have furnished houses and while much of it is old, some antiques, some just good early Americana, we just do not have room for it.  It is so sad, a lifetime of accumulation--actually more than one lifetime.  My mom always used to say a lot of it came from my dad’s parents.  So now I need to figure out what to do.

I have a garage full of old tools, some just old, some antique, many interesting things in the house too--things that a cobbler used back in the 1800’s--just a lot of stuff.  Am going to take pictures to send to two auction houses that have been recommended to me.  From what I understand, if they think they can sell things, they will come and pack it up and ship it to their storage places which is terrific.  But there is still a lot that they won’t take, so I guess tag sales are in my future and oh lord, it is daunting.  I think once I get going I will be OK, it is just the getting going that is bugging me.

I tried to get my husband to go up with me this weekend, but he has things to do, including a soccer game so he declined.  He did not think I saw the smirk on his face but I did.  He so did not want to do this with me.  I guess I don’t blame him.  But he will have to go sometime.

Am going out to dinner tonight with an old friend from high school so that is nice and then tomorrow will take my mom’s youngest sister, the only one left of the 10 siblings, out to dinner so a few bright spots in the weekend.

And now that I have brought everyone down, let me say it is not all gloom and doom, I am just feeling sorry for myself and that is stupid and something I rarely do.  The sun is shining, the weekend is supposed to be gorgeous weather so I am going to stop whining, put on my big girl pants and get moving.

Have a great weekend!!

Just watched this about Digital Copiers.  If true, this is absolutely insane.  Anyone heard or read anything about this?

Sorry I have been missing for a while, life sort of interferes with my fun sometimes.  Work, volunteering, little things like that and I have just had no real time to myself.  Today I am sitting here waiting for Harvey Doors to show up with replacements for my defective storm doors and for the powerwashers for the outside of the house (inside could use powerwashing too!) I got up early and moved the cars out of the garage so they could park their trucks and we would not have to make them move and it is is 9AM and no one has shown up yet.  Why am I surprised?  I am not even sure the powerwashing is going to happen since it is raining.  Guess it does not matter except to the guys who do the work.

If you have the time and the inclination, visit the link above and let me know your thoughts.  I just cannot believe it!

Happy Patriot's Day and Marathon Monday

It is sunny today, first time we have seen the sun in I do not know how long.  However, it is windy and COLD.  I know it is cold cause my cat was out for about a half hour and since she came in, she has been sprawled out in the window in the full sun.  Normally she can do that for a bit, then moves to a cooler place, but so far she is just soaking up the heat.

For those of you in other parts of the country, today is a holiday/Patriot’s Day - IF you live in Suffolk County.  For the rest of us in the Boston area, we like to pretend it is our holiday, but it really isn’t.  Today is Marathon Monday which you all know about.  That means the Red Sox play their annual game at 11AM instead of a reasonable time.  Not that watching the game is any big deal, at least not if they play the way they have been.  Man, could they get off to any worse start to a season?  I don’t get it.

Speaking of the marathon, last night’s news mentioned there could be as many as 2,000 runners stranded all over Europe because of the volcanic ash issue.  They said they really will not know until today how many were supposed to be here and could not make it.  Amazing.  Who knew!

OH--I found this amusing.  Started listening to the local news on ABC last night because something golf was still on CBS which is the channel I prefer for local news.  So our channel 5 went into the weather forecast for today and for the week, it was pretty depressing, not much to look forward to.  Damp, cool, some rain, a little sun.  Then I switched back to channel 4 (CBS) for their news.........the weather comes on and it is not TOTALLY different than the other channel but substantially so.  Now these are two local channels, local forecasts, using presumably the same techniques and technology to come up with a forecast...... So who do you believe?  No wonder they never get the weather right.  Today is a perfect example, neither one said FULL SUN, and yet it is.  I have decided to believe channel 4 cause their forecast was a lot more optimistic than channel 5!!  And they are both probably wrong.

Do I do errands today or do I stay home and clean my house?  Big decision.............HA

And that is it people, I got NOTHING. Absolutely nothing to offer.  So let’s call this an open forum and anyone who wants to can offer a comment on most anything they want to!!  That work?

Maybe I should start an advice column on Kate’s blog!!  Someone told me the other day I am SO good at offering advice!!  Yeah, to other people, too bad I don’t take my OWN advice.  laughter

Play nice, write to me so I have something to respond to!!

Bits and pieces

Good Morning!

Coffee anyone?  Freshly ground Kona coffee, smells wonderful, tastes even better!!  Anyone use Dunkin’ coffee?  I break down every once in a while and buy the beans, but it never lives up to the taste in the stores......my husband says it is the proximity to the grease in the doughnuts that makes it better there than at home!  Maybe!  Speaking of doughnuts, do you spell it donuts or as I do, doughnuts?

How many of you are heading to the city today (Boston) to hear the queen of the tea party speak? Somehow I doubt many visitors to Kate’s blog will be making the trek into the city.  Dropped my husband off at the train this morning and it was the usual group no extras - maybe on the later train there might be more, but I doubt it.  Nothing would please me more than to see substantially less than the 10,000 they are predicting.  Of course, it will probably be many more.....depending on how many people have nothing else to do.  I listen to the same radio station every morning until 10 cause it is usually pretty funny--this morning one of the guys that works on the station was going on and on about Sarah Palin, the tea party movement and as much as they tried to talk him down and pound some sense into him, he drank the kool-aid and I can tell you, he was having none of it.  His misinformation was scary and that is what is wrong with all of this.  They have picked out some lies, some big ones and keep expounding on it and people believe it.  Makes me crazy.

My boss is a Republican and she and I manage to get along quite well - I talk she listens, she talks I listen, but yesterday she went off on the healthcare plan and how it was going to cost her big - how, I have no idea as she is a SMALL business owner and has her insurance through her husband.  She does not provide me with insurance as I have my own so not sure where she is coming from.  But she went on and on and on and I wanted to scream.  But decided sometimes it is just better to shut up and tune out.  So I did!!

I am getting back into the political arena locally as a woman I know and admire is running for a state position.  Met her years ago on the Robert Reich campaign and we have more or less stayed in touch since then.  She has asked me to help her on her campaign and I agreed (sometimes I need a reality check!).  I told her I would give her as much time as I could so we will see.

My boss has asked me to work full time - I have worked part time for her for about 7 years now.  Her business is picking up. she has just picked up a new. huge line to add to her companies she represents and anticipates needing more help.  She is a manufacturer’s rep for furniture lines, one fabric line and one glass line - commercial, not residential.  Anyone need anything, let me know!!  I am her inside sales support person.  Anyway, I work part time so that I have time to do volunteer work which I love and work on political campaigns etc. as they come along.  I convinced her (I think) to hire someone else for the days I am not there as I absolutely do not want to spend more time in the office, particularly this time of year--assuming we have a real spring and summer this year!!

Planning our trip back to Oahu this summer now--will go in August for about 3 weeks again. Plane fares are outrageous though, I could go right now or next month for about half of what we will end up paying in August.  Oh well.....I have LOTS of miles on my capital one card so will use them.  We did not make it there last year cause of a few things out of our control, so am really looking forward to it.  I would move there in a heartbeat if we could afford it.  We do go around with a realtor-friend each time in the hopes we will see something we can afford but what I want and what we can afford are very different! Joe has convinced me there is no reason why, in a year or two, we can just rent something near the beach for 3-4 months each year which makes much more sense than owning something.

Got to go, work beckons......if you go to B-town, I want to hear all about it.  monkey dance
