Yesterday we enjoyed a very warm day with temps in the mid 70s. The sun shone and it was like a summer’s day. So warm in fact, that clothing seemed to be an option that many of the high school girls eschewed. Now, I’ve never been much of a supporter for dress codes and I don’t think that I’m especially Victorian in my attitudes, but do I think a dress code that requires clothing would be a step in the right direction.
What I saw were a lot of belly buttons, bare midriffs, and a whole lot of really deep cleavage. And the sheer little spandexy numbers that scarcely covered the things that were covered didn’t exactly leave anything to the imagination anyway. Every year it seems as if they find more ways to wear less.
Well, I’m not the only one who’s noticed. The Class of ‘06 hung a banner off the edge of the school’s front terrace yesterday that said, “Classes of ‘08 and ‘09! We can see your booty. Cover up!” And they hung shirts off the railings that had sleeves and a discernible bottom hem. There was a fashion boutique of stylish tops hanging there for the world to see. It was quite a statement that both girls and boys were in on. They are, apparently, tired of seeing it all hang out, all day every day.
For some reason, that surprised me. Maybe because the message was so blatantly displayed. That the display was allowed to stay up all day long was probably a statement from the administration as well. That surprised me, too. But I wonder if it’ll result in any changes because, really, after what I saw yesterday, someone needs to enforce some dress code rules as long as the parents won’t.
